The GAC Adoption Process
The adoption process begins with you filling-out our online application. You should receive an immediate email confirming that it came through. Then, within a day or two (no longer), you will be contacted by your nearest GAC volunteer placement representative for a brief telephone interview. A home visit will be scheduled for meeting family members and pets, and to talk about what you are looking for in a greyhound. This approach helps us to identify dogs for you to meet – the dogs who best match your desires, family, roommates as well as your general living situation. This is the key to a successful adoption. We want you to be happy with a well-matched greyhound, and we want the greyhound to be safe and happy in a well-matched home.
Your local placement representative will be your advocate as well as an advocate for the greyhound you choose to adopt.
We get to know the personality and temperament of each greyhound during its stay at our facility. Every dog is tested for compatibility with children, cats and other dog breeds. We can also test compatibility with various animals including horses, goats, hens, ferrets, and even bunny rabbits.
You can schedule a personal visit to the GAC campus to meet with our experienced profile team who will introduce you to the greyhounds that are most suitable for you. If you live too far away from our Center (near San Diego) and visiting is not an option, our profilers will work with your placement representative to provide you with complete details and information on the dogs they recommend for you. When you have chosen your adoptee, he or she will be transported and delivered to you via a relay of volunteers. Adopting a rescued greyhound from GAC can be, and often is, a profound life-changing experience.
We place greyhounds mostly in areas throughout California where we have trained volunteers to handle adoptions and provide local adopter support.
Please fill out our online application, and we will contact you soon.
