Greyhounds on the GO!

April 14, 2015 by Greyhound Adoption Center

GAC rolls out its new rescue van this weekend thanks to a generous grant from the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) and donations from supporters.

This new vehicle is a tremendous asset to the organization, essentially acting as a moving billboard for greyhound adoption. GAC founder and president Darren Rigg says, “This new tool gives us the ability to travel across the country when called upon to rescue more dogs living in dire situations with the confidence that the animals and our volunteers are safe and secure.”

Dozens of families are expected to view the new Ram Promaster window van at the kennel’s Open House this Sunday, April 19 from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at 4821 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, 92019. It will be parked at the kennel’s Run-Free Field where off-leash greyhounds can run for fun in a protected, private dog park.

The new van was purchased at a discount from Carl Burger Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram World in La Mesa.

The interior can be configured for up to six dogs in spacious crates or set up as a common space for up to 12 dogs. The rear A/C will run without engine power for up to six hours so the drivers can take a rest during long trips. When configured for events, the vehicle can safely carry promotional materials, booth equipment, tables, chairs and banners. An attached awning provides shade.

The Greyhound Adoption Center rescues up to 150 greyhounds and greyhound mixes a year. There are about 20,000 greyhounds still racing in this country, so that’s a lot of 45-mph couch potatoes in need of forever homes.

Greyhound advocates nationwide have declared April as National-Adopt-A-Greyhound month. Come to the kennel this weekend and get in on the fun!
