The well-being of each greyhound, volunteer, supporter, and the visiting public at the Greyhound Adoption Center (GAC) is a priority. After a recent intake, some dogs at the El Cajon center began excessive coughing, which appears to now be spreading to other dogs in the kennel population. As a precaution, and in consideration of public health, GAC established a voluntary isolation protocol.
GAC’s Veterinary Medical Director, Candy Lewis DVM, instructed GAC staff and volunteers at the Center to put all adoptions on hold and to accept no new dogs from racetracks pending results of lab tests. All volunteers are being asked to use sanitation protocols and restrict all kennel dogs from the multi-use fields. All 47 rescued greyhounds appear to be in good health except for the coughing exhibited by some.
Because GAC’s monthly Open House is scheduled for Sunday, February 18, and lab results are not complete, management and the Board of Directors have decided to cancel the February Open House. Even if isolation is not required, cancelling the open house will give the coughing dogs a calm environment in which to recover.
GAC apologizes for any inconvenience that the cancellation of Open House creates. However, we hope that our supporters understand that the health of the dogs at our facility is a priority. We look forward to greeting you on March 18 from 1 to 3 pm when we resume our regular Open House schedule.
