Uber for Greyhounds

February 19, 2016 by Greyhound Adoption Center

When our hounds are adopted outside SoCal, they just call Uber — sort of. GAC’s Transport Volunteers can be reached anytime night or day to help bring some beautiful hounds to their new homes across California. We have lots of great photos to share showing these very happy hounds with their new families along with the dedicated volunteers who safely delivered them.

Let’s start our story way back in late August 2015 with GAC’s four-year-old Bearnaise (right) and six-year-old Sloppy Joe pictured below with Bob Fluty at Castaic’s Del Valle County Park.
01 - Sloppy Joe & Bearnaise with Bob in Castaic
Sloppy Joe’s racing career spanned 4½ long years with 317 races while Bearnaise entered 213 races in a mere two years. These sweet dogs have earned the right to become full-time couch potatoes! In Fresno, the dogs were met by Rodger Meier and Michele Gonzalez from the town of Rescue (east of Sacramento) for a drive to Lodi, Calif.

Below, Sloppy Joe (renamed Lava) joins his new family that includes longtime GAC adopters Rusty and Joy, Noodles and Pickles. It was love-at-first-sight and has only gotten better since adoption day!

Bearnaise joined Mark and Robin’s family in Anderson, Calif. Here she is (renamed Olive) in a shot of the entire family (left to right) son Jacob, daughter Makenna, yellow lab Hazel, Robin, border collie Nellie, Mark, Olive and son Braden.

Our next big transport involved GAC’s Devotion and Kimba heading to their forever homes in northern California on October 24. We begin with a group shot in Galt, Calif. Volunteer Cathy Wilcox holds two-year-old brindle Devotion and long-time GAC transport volunteer Barbara Wilcox is nearby. GAC’s Kimba is being held by her new family members — Kate and Bernie.

Barbara and Cathy continued on to Orangevale where they delivered Devotion (renamed Katie) to Mike and his other GAC hound, Sandy.

In December of last year, GAC’s Bardolfo headed up to Fresno thanks to transporters Bob Fluty and Jim Howell.

Now renamed Riley, this handsome boy will be spending his life-after-racing going for extended walks around the neighborhood with Fresno adopters Rick and Debbie.

Shortly before Christmas, GAC’s Marie and Opal headed to their forever homes in Central and Northern California. Both red Marie and black Opal were a few months shy of two years old when adopted.

Now Marie happily lives with veteran GAC adopters John and Jennifer in Clovis. This photo leaves no doubt that Marie (renamed Pepper) absolutely loves her new bed and toy!

Back to Opal’s transport…she traveled several hundred miles to be united with her new adopter, Jessica, and greyhound Maggie. Renamed Mabel, this sweet little black greyhound really enjoyed bonding with her new family!

At the start of the New Year, our transport team got back into gear, ferrying youngsters Aida (on the right below) and Donny to new homes in Northern California. Veteran volunteer Paul Hartup joined the dogs in Fresno for a trip to Sacramento.

Donny (renamed Bones) now lives with first-time greyhound adopter Dana and Moo, a Boston-Terrier/Cattle-Dog mix.

Aida (renamed Carmen) has joined Jean and Lynn in Oroville. Their home also includes greyhound Maui and a cat named Abby. During the past 20+ years, Jean has been mom to eight other greyhounds before Aida/Carmen entered her life!

On to January 30 when GAC’s Flattery (on the left) and Munday headed to their forever homes in Northern California.

Flattery and Munday

Munday is safe at home in Orangevale with Jeff, Katrina, their son Griffin, and their shepherd mix Roo. Word has it that Munday is settling in very quickly!

Our final photo features Flattery (renamed Lucy) bonding with her new mom Kathy in the town of Paradise. A fitting place for a retired greyhound!

Many thanks to our dedicated GAC transport team that made all these greyhound dreams come true! If you are interested in volunteering, please contact us today!
